Annual Schools' Mass at St. John's Cathedral
On Wednesday 21st June a group of pupils from both the Junior and Senior Schools travelled to Portsmouth to take part in the annual Schools' Mass at St. John's Cathedral. Every school in the diocese attended, each with its own banner and bringing a donation of money raised by pupils for this year's diocesan charities. OLA was fully involved, with Alex of Year 8 reading three of the bidding prayers and Tomas and Ewan taking part in the procession. Bishop Philip gave a fascinating homily about his experiences flying in helicopters and the lives of St Aloysius Gonzaga and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, whom he held up to the children as inspirations. Our pupils particularly enjoyed the music at the Mass and their picnic lunch afterwards in Victoria Park, just across the road from the Cathedral. Mr Oliver, who attended with Mr Hathaway and, together with our own pupils, a group of staff and pupils for St Edmund's primary school in Abingdon, commented: 'It was a wonderful occasion, with a palpable sense of the diocesan community coming together and celebrating all the good things our schools do to raise money for worthwhile causes and to join in worship together.'
