Year 11 set 1 Scientists and year 10 Academic Scholars attended GCSE Science Live! at the New Theatre, Oxford on February 7th. This was a day of talks given by some of the most well-known and preeminent scientists, all of whom are highly engaging and accomplished at communicating science to a younger audience.
Pupils had the pleasure of listening to superbly entertaining talks by Professor Steve Jones on why genetics is now considered to be influenced by both nature and nurture, and Professor Lord Robert Winston who spoke about his ground-breaking work.
Professor Jim Al-Khalili gave us a thought-provoking insight into time travel and whether it is indeed possible; Dr Kate Lancaster continued on the Physics theme by delivering an informative summary of the current work on nuclear fusion.
Dr Ben Goldacre (of Bad Science fame), finished the day with a highly amusing lecture on the misuse of pseudo-science in selling an idea or product.
The talks were interspersed with sessions from a senior examiner, who gave useful hints and tips on exam technique. Science Live! was a highly entertaining and informative day hugely enjoyed by all the pupils who attended.
