The Swimming Pool

One of OLA’s most popular features is its 25m indoor swimming pool. It is located in the middle of the school, between the Junior and Senior School sites.

Our Swimming Pool Manager, Mr Bogue, has been working at OLA for over 15 years. During that time he has developed a comprehensive set of lessons, clubs and activities for pupils throughout the school.

Junior School

From Nursery until Year 2, pupils have one swimming lesson a week. The children are awarded graded certificates, from Tadpole through to Super Shark, throughout the early years to encourage their swimming progress and reward their efforts.

Swimming lessons increase to two a week for Years 3 to 6, with plenty of opportunities to swim for distance badges. We give the older children in the Junior School the chance to show off their swimming skills in the annual inter-house swimming gala. Each child has the chance to represent their house and earn points depending on where they come in the race.

Mr Bogue also runs an after school swimming club especially for the Junior School, to enable everyone who enjoys swimming to make the most of this facility.

Senior School

In the Senior School, boys and girls have separate swimming lessons as part of their PE provision, alternating every half a term. The Senior School also holds a house swimming gala every year, where pupils in Years 7 to 9 fiercely compete to earn points for their houses.

Those who really love the water can join our Senior School Swimming Squad, which competes against other schools in swimming galas throughout the year. There is squad training before school on a Tuesday and after school on Thursdays. On Friday, the swimming pool again opens after school for a fun swim, which is open to pupils of all abilities, and has proven to be an extremely popular way to start the weekend.

Extra-curricular activities

OLA Swimming Pool is an accredited site for IQL, which provides training and competency assessment for pool lifeguards and first aiders. Many pupils in the Upper School choose to train as lifeguards, following the NPLQ course, and some can even help teach lessons for pupils lower down in the school.

In addition to the general swimming clubs, pupils can join up for synchronised swimming or survive and save courses after school. We have also run try-diving courses with the Oxford Diving Centre, giving pupils the chance to try out scuba diving equipment safely.

Mr Bogue has also run a number of trips abroad for OLA pupils and their families. These have included a diving trip to the Red Sea, and family snorkelling and diving trips to the Mediterranean. Keep an eye out for the latest news on summer expeditions!

Community swimming and holiday courses

Our community swimming lessons are open to adults and children, although a waiting list currently applies. To express your interest, please contact Mrs Helen Baker in the Bursary (01235 524658).

We offer various holiday crash courses during the summer holiday period, which are open to all pupils and the local community. These range from swimming lessons for children aged 5 and above, to synchronised swimming workshops and occasionally kayaking proficiency courses, as well as casual swimming. Details of these courses and sessions are available from the Bursary.
